Here in Connecticut we think that we don’t have to worry about troublesome insects. Wrong. Connecticut has its share of insects to be weary of. One of these such insects is the carpenter ant.
Carpenter ants are actually a native species to Northeast. Like so many other ants, carpenter ants are black except that they have a stripe or two of yellow on their rear end. The worker ants are usually ¼” to 5/8”. The large queens are larger, up to ¾”.
The name ‘carpenter’ is derived from the fact that they commonly nest in decaying wood and then continue on and branch out into the actual solid and sound wood. These nests that they create into wood weaken the structural integrity of the wood. This wood source can be the frame work of any building or wooden structure. Playgrounds, swing sets, or the wood framework of buildings. This damage and their presence is often deep inside structures out of sight. Being out of sight enables them to cause a lot damage in a short period of time and without being discovered. The best clue that you have carpenter ants is to see the actual ant and be able to determine that it truly is a carpenter ant, and not one of the other 1,000 ant species that exist here in the United States.
Carpenter ants tend to gravitate towards areas with a consistent water source. Locate and repair any areas in your plumbing that may leak or sweat. This water can attract carpenter ants, and other insects into your building and inside the walls and infrastructure.
