If you've never dealt with a stink bug issue before, these bugs can be disturbing, even if they didn't stink--which they do. Stink bugs are about the size of a dime, have a hard shell, and have the ability to fly. Not a great combination. But, don't worry. There are some things you can do to prevent stink bugs from getting in.
Seal Entry Points
A close inspection of the exterior of your home is vital for keeping these bugs out. If you find any cracks, holes, or gaps, use a caulking gun or some other material to fill them in. Pay close attention around pipes, behind your chimney, and underneath wood fascia and soffits. If you find cracks in your basement walls, especially around windows, use mortar to seal them up.
Fix Screens
One of the primary ways stink bugs will gain entry into your home is through holes in your screening. It is important to replace damaged screens or, at the very least, patch the holes. If you would like to patch them yourself, there are helpful videos on YouTube.
Reduce Exterior White Light
Stink bugs are attracted to light. If you have exterior lights, it is a good idea to keep them off, or consider replacing white bulbs with yellow insect-resistant bulbs. Be aware that these bugs will also be attracted to the light going out your windows. Keeping shades drawn at night can make your home less attractive to stink bugs.
Fix Leaks
Moisture is attractive to many pests, and stink bugs are no exception. If you have puddles around your home, stink bugs will take notice. Make sure you have any leaky pipes or spigots fixed, and inspect your gutters for any obstructions or breaks. These are also important repairs for general home maintenance.
Inspect Items Before You Bring Them In
If you store boxes or other items in an exterior shed or outbuilding, make sure to check them thoroughly before bringing them into your home. Stink bugs can get into these places and use them to shuttle their way inside.
What if they still get in?
If you keep getting stink bugs inside, it isn't surprising. It doesn't take much of a gap or hole for these pests to find a way in. That is why it is important to have an educated professional do a detailed inspection and administer a barrier treatment that will bolster vulnerable areas. Like many pests, stink bugs are able to see holes in your walls you don't even know are there. But, when you have a pest company with over a hundred years of experience, like American Pest Solutions, helping you, it is no problem sealing your home and keeping bugs out.
