In New England, spider activity and the dangers that come along with them are at their peak during the summertime. The most common spiders you will see this summer are your harmless everyday house spiders. These spiders spin unsightly webs, dangle from your doorways, crawl around your home, and may make you shriek in fear, but they are not venomous. Nevertheless, we surely don’t want to share our living space with them.

There are dangerous and venomous spiders that can be found in our area but they are usually associated with packages that have been transported from other states where these spiders are more common. The two dangerous spiders that can be found in New England are the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider. Black widow spiders have black, shiny bodies with a distinctive red hourglass pattern on their underside. Their bites can be painful and in some cases both toxic and harmful. Brown recluse spiders are more difficult to identify because they can look very similar to the common house spider. Brown recluse spiders are brown, less than 1 inch in size, have only six eyes instead of the usual eight, and are smooth and hairless. They also move slower than most house spiders. The biggest difference between these two spiders is their bites. House spider bites are harmless while brown recluse spider bites can cause some serious problems such as pain and redness around the bite that may turn into a deep open sore that will not heal, along with fever, chills, nausea, joint pain, weakness, and other more serious issues.

Regardless of the type of spider, no one wants spiders infesting their home. These spiders will oftentimes invade our homes while searching for a food source, other pests that are found in our home. Spiders can enter homes through cracks, crevices, broken screens, gaps around door frames, and on boxes, bags, or packages being brought in from outside. Once indoors, they will tend to hide in basements, attics, and closets, as well as under furniture, decks, and other places that provide dark, secluded spaces for them to thrive.
