The Different Kinds Of Beetles In Western Massachusetts
There are several different kinds of beetles that are found in Western Massachusetts. Some of the most common include:
- Powder post beetles: This powderpost beetle in Western Massachusetts has a long, two-segmented body that is usually black or dark brown in color. Their bodies are only about 1/16 of an inch long and have a long, lean shape. They have two short antennae sprouting from the tip of their head.
- Carpet beetles: Carpet beetles in Western Massachusetts can come in a wide range of colors, which can include brown, black, tan, yellow, or some combination of those colors. They are small and round and have a domed-shaped body that can measure between ⅛ and 3/16 of an inch in length.
- Banded longhorn beetles: This beetle gets its name from the two long antennae on the top of its head that resemble long horns. They can grow up to half an inch long. This beetle has a long, slender body that is black with yellow rings. It also has six long legs, two wings, and can fly.
- Ground beetle grubs: These unique beetles look more like a centipede than a beetle. They have long, segmented bodies that are usually black and about half an inch long. They mainly live underground.
- Ladybugs: These beetles are probably the only ones on this list that people are not scared of. They have small, round reddish-orange bodies with black spots. They also have a strong set of wings that allows them to travel long distances in a short amount of time.
Beetles are such unique creatures. Most beetle species have one-of-a-kind traits that you cannot find in other species.
How Much Damage Can Beetles Do In My Home?
The type of damage that your home receives depends on the type of beetle that you have. Carpet beetles, for example, are known to eat away at soft cloth materials, like carpets and clothing.
Other types of beetles tend to do more damage outside of your home. Many of the beetles will eat the vegetables and plants you have growing in a garden. The ground beetle grub may stay out of sight, but that doesn't stop it from destroying your lawn by eating the grass roots in your yard.
Simple Tips To Prevent Beetles In Your Home
Beetles are small, sneaky creatures that can infest your home before you even realize they are there. Some of the things that you can do to keep beetles out of your Western Massachusetts home include:
- Eliminate potential hiding spots by removing the clutter from your home and yard.
- Store food in airtight containers.
- Seal up any gaps or cracks that you find around the exterior walls of your home.
By following these three simple steps, you can help to reduce your chances of having beetles in your home.
