You Don't Want This Furry Critter Finding Its Way Inside Your Hartford Home

How well do you know squirrels? Do you know that the word squirrel in Greek means shadow tail? Are you aware that the hind legs of a squirrel are double-jointed or that a squirrel can find food buried beneath a foot of snow? If you don't, it's no big deal. But there are some things everyone should know about squirrels such as their ability to bring ticks, lice, fleas, mites and other parasites into your yard or into your home. They may be fun to watch, scampering around in your backyard, but we're here to tell you, if you haven't dealt with some of the many problems squirrels cause, you should definitely take the time to learn from others who have.

It's Just a Cute Little Squirrel

Sure. Squirrels are cute. We agree. But the threats they pose to your health and your property aren't cute at all. Squirrels can tear holes in window and door screens. They can chew holes in window and door frames. They also claw holes in gaskets around roof penetrations or chew their way in through soffits. They get inside attics and wall voids, where they leave their feces and urine. One of the worst things squirrels do is something you wouldn't expect them to do; if you corner a squirrel, it is likely to attack you. Trust us when we say you don't want these furry critters chewing their way into your Hartford home.

Entry Points

There are a surprising number of ways squirrels can get into a home. Squirrels can get in from the bottom to the very top of your home. A squirrel can chew through a basement screen and window frame to gain access or go right down your chimney. It does, however, prefer higher entry points. If you have tree branches that hang over your roof, this can increase your chances of a squirrel infestation. Once a squirrel gets on your roof, they can claw and chew on many locations to create a hole large enough to enter.

  • Keep tree branches trimmed away from your home to make it harder for squirrels to get on your roof.
  • If a squirrel, or some other pest, has made a hole the size of a baseball, it is vital that you seal it.
  • Expanding foam can get the job done until you're able to do a proper repair.
  • Small holes can be made into larger holes. Use a caulking gun and a high-quality silicone caulk to seal them.
  • If you suspect a squirrel is going in and out of your property, it is wise to avoid trapping the squirrel inside. You'll need a trap to catch the squirrel or you need to hire a licensed professional to trap the squirrel.

The Benefits of Hiring a Wildlife Management Professional
